GETTING TO KNOW GEOTHERMAL

Geothermal Heating

During the heating season, a geothermal system uses underground pipes (loop) to extract heat from the ground. As the system pulls heat from the loop it distributes warm air throughout the home using a conventional duct system. The same process can also be used for a radiant floor system or domestic hot water heating.

Geothermal Cooling

In the cooling mode, the heating process is reversed – creating cool, conditioned air throughout the home. Instead of extracting heat from the ground, heat is extracted from the air inside of your home and either moved back into the earth via the loop, or used to preheat the water in your hot water tank.

  1. Low Operating Costs. A geothermal heat pump can save you up to 60% on your heating and cooling costs over a conventional HVAC system.
  2. Uses clean, renewable energy. With a geothermal heat pump, there’s no harmful emission of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or other gases, making the air inside of your home cleaner and healthier.
  3. Flexible Installation. A geothermal system can be installed in both new construction and replacement applications.
  4. Quiet. Unlike traditional air conditioning, a geothermal system does not have a noisy outdoor compressor. And the indoor unit is generally as loud as a refrigerator.
  5. Long Life. Geothermal heat pumps are built to last 25 years, compared to a 12-15 year lifespan of a conventional furnace and air conditioner. The outdoor loop typically lasts 50 years.

Through December 31, 2016 homeowners who install an ENERGY STAR certified geothermal heat pump are eligible for a 30% federal tax credit.   And rebates up to $1,200 are available to AEP customers on select ENERGY STAR geothermal equipment.
